How has your background prepared you for your new role at RHC?

“My previous role as a manager has given me a great opportunity to work with different groups of people, understanding their needs and the challenges on a daily basis. The ability to listen with empathy and communicate effectively helped me build their trust to resolve any issues.

I took a job as a Care Assistant in a Care Home in Bath in March 2023, to gain experience and to learn the rules and regulations within the care sector. This has given me a chance to learn new skills, an opportunity to experience what it’s like to be caring for someone as well as working with a great team. I’ve learned that caring is not just doing what you have to do in your job role, it is also communicating, getting to know the person and giving them confidence, by showing how important they are and having that responsibility in someone’s life. It is the most fulfilling thing to do as a care assistant.

Being a care assistant has also made me realise that everyone is special in their own way and deserves to be treated the same way you would want to be treated. In life, we all need someone to talk to and I feel very privileged to be that person, to be with them when they need it the most.”

What has inspired you to want to be involved in the adult social care sector?

“I find inspiration to work in the social care sector through my own experience looking after family members and a friend who needed care. I grew up with grandparents around, this is a common culture in the Philippines to look after our elders in the comfort of our own home. When I came to the UK to reunite with my parents, I discovered that it is a very different situation here. Instead, retirement homes are being introduced to accommodate and support the elderly.

Helping others made me feel good as I also miss having my grandparents around. Being able to assist someone and put a smile on their face is what motivates me to achieve great things.

Working as a care assistant can be a very rewarding career which allows you to have a real positive impact on people’s lives. People helping people, working in healthcare, whether directly or indirectly to another person, you will be changing lives and the lives of their families to have the quality of life they desire.”
