Celebrating Silver Sunday at Shelburne Lodge

As the autumn season sets in, the team at Radfield Home Care Wycombe, Beaconsfield & South Bucks has been busy connecting with our local community and finding meaningful ways to bring people together.

Celebrating Silver Sunday at Shelburne Lodge

We were absolutely delighted to join the wonderful team at Shelburne Lodge for their Silver Sunday celebration on Sunday, 4th October. Silver Sunday is a national event dedicated to celebrating older people and taking active steps to tackle social isolation and loneliness in older adults.

According to research published by Age UK, more than 1.4 million older people across the UK regularly experience chronic loneliness, with autumn and winter often intensifying feelings of separation. Participating in regular community events helps rebuild those vital weekly social routines.

The event centred around a special Community Sunday Lunch, bringing 17 community guests together with 50 residents for an afternoon of good food and relaxed conversation.

A huge thank you to Helen, the activity coordinator at Shelburne Lodge, who made everyone feel so genuinely welcome from the moment we arrived. We also want to extend a special mention to Chef Paula, who crafted an incredible lunch that everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

After lunch, guests gathered in the lounge to relax, chat, and spend quality time together. Informal gatherings often remain one of the most effective ways of tackling social isolation in older adults.

Bringing support together at the Bourne End community care fair

On Monday 12th October, our team hosted a dedicated Community Care Fair at the Bourne End Community Centre. The afternoon brought local residents, family carers, and specialists together under one roof.

Physical health and mobility took centre stage during the afternoon. According to clinical data from NHS England, around one in three adults aged 65 and over experience at least one fall each year, making proactive strength and balance exercises essential.

Attendees learned about specialised local exercise programmes, including Otago and Move It or Lose It, alongside community walking groups from Simply Walk and specialist rehabilitation guidance from Horizon Local Physiotherapy.

To help older residents maintain safety and independence at home, visitors also explored practical housing adaptations and specialist healthcare resources:

  • Home adaptations: Absolute Mobility shared expert advice on level-access bathroom design, walk-in showers, and practical safety aids.
  • Health checks: LSJ provided booked ear health checks alongside gentle Pranic Healing sessions.
  • Financial guidance: Grey Matters was on hand to offer clear, impartial advice on managing long-term care costs.
  • Community voices: Bucks Opportunities listened to residents’ personal experiences to help shape future council and community initiatives.
  • Sensory support: Talking Newspapers demonstrated how audio publications help blind and visually impaired people stay informed and connected.

We extend a special thank you to our event partner Shelburne Lodge, for collaborating with us to bring this event to life, as well as to the Princes Centre, whose adult day service kindly provided delicious cakes for everyone to enjoy while helping us raise valuable funds.

Ultimately, the day was all about connecting people, sharing information, raising awareness, and ensuring everyone knows what support is available nearby.

Inspiring the next generation: Aspire 2026 at Buckinghamshire New University

Alongside local community care events, our team was proud to represent Radfield Home Care at the Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) Aspire 2026 careers fair.

We spoke with students about what domiciliary care involves, how it supports individuals to remain independent and comfortable in their own homes, and the rewarding career opportunities available within the care sector.

Whether exploring future career options, interested in health and social care, or simply curious about making a real difference in people’s lives, a career in care offers remarkable opportunities to learn, grow, develop new skills, and make a meaningful impact in your community.
