Radfield is a Certified B Corporation

Written by

A B Corp logo

What is a B Corp?

B Corps (Better Corporations) are companies run as a force for good.

Becoming a Certified B Corp means that all aspects of the company have been scrutinised and that the company has been accredited with an ethical business stamp of approval. In short, B Corp is to business, what Fair Trade certification is to coffee.

Business must create value for society, not just shareholders.

Why do B Corps Matter?

The global B Corp movement is growing and becoming an increasingly powerful agent of change.

Unlike traditional companies, Certified B Corporations are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions not only on their shareholders, but also on their stakeholders (e.g. workers, suppliers, community, clients, and the environment).

By voluntarily meeting higher standards of transparency, accountability, and performance, Certified B Corps are distinguishing themselves in a cluttered marketplace by offering a positive vision of a better way to do business.

Radfield as a B Corp

When we first heard about the B Corp movement it immediately resonated with us as it seemed to be a perfect fit for what we have always strived to do in our business and that is to put all of our people first. Our staff feel and talk about being part of the 'Radfield family' and our people led culture has heavily influenced the way that we operate and structure our business.

Radfield Home Care are a company built on positive relationships. We are all about our people, all of the time - be it clients, their families, health care professionals, our staff, their families and so on.... This is why Radfield has developed beyond being simply a care business - Radfield is a community of care.

We became a B Corp because we wanted to demonstrate our commitment to lead our people and to our planet in a transparent and clear way. We are extremely proud to be the very first healthcare company in the UK to become a Certified B Corp and to represent the care sector within the B Corp community.

#B The Change

Joining the global community of B Corps enables us to work alongside similar minded businesses who share our values. Each Certified B Corp makes a legal pledge to expand the traditional bottom line of business from being all about profit to also include People and the Planet. This is the 'Triple Bottom Line' which separates Certified B Corps from their competitors.

By legally embedding these principles it ensures that the Radfield culture that is so dear to us will remain a part of the very fabric of the company for future years to come.

B Corp Using Business As A Force For Good

The Future

B Corps are growing rapidly and as the momentum increases it will become a familiar term and one that is associated with a collective of companies that you would preferentially choose to do business with.

The UK care sector has been subject to repeated negativity around the quality of care, conditions for care workers and so on. It is a challenging sector as there is simply not enough public money to ensure all those in need, receive the care they require and that care workers are paid well and looked after.

At Radfield Home Care we cannot, unfortunately, solve all of the problems that the sector faces - however we can do our bit. We can ensure that the care we provide is second to none, that our clients are always treated with respect, dignity and compassion, and that our care workers are well remunerated and well looked after.

We can also drive positive change by being a respected voice in the UK care sector and to push for improvements that safeguard and enhance quality of life for vulnerable people.

Radfield Home Care has won and been shortlisted for many awards for its outstanding care provision and for being a great business to work for.

Our clients and carers give us excellent feedback year on year which is a great testimony to the fact that our recruitment processes, training and operational systems are finely tuned and work well, resulting in satisfied customers and employees and therefore a successful business.

We have spearheaded the development of medication policy in domiciliary care in the West Midlands to enable other providers to work to our high standards and we regularly work with partner agencies such as the Dementia Action Alliance and Dignity in Care to promote and share best practice.

We have been leading a campaign in Shrewsbury to make the town a Dementia Friendly Community and have been working with local businesses and groups to improve awareness of dementia and thereby  making the town more accessible and supportive to people living with dementia.

Our Story

Written by

Home Care VisitRadfield Home Care was established in 2008 in Shrewsbury. Having grown up in their parents residential home for the elderly, we decided to continue the family tradition of caring for the older generation and  Radfield Home Care was born!

We started  out with a small team of carers working alongside us to look after our clients who were soon discovering that Radfield really was different to the other home care agencies  that were available. Right from the very outset we were determined to offer the highest standard of care, which to us meant having choice, being respected, and being in control no matter what your life situation was.

Over time our ethos evolved into our Core Values  and our Caring for our Carers pledge   which are public statements to demonstrate the commitment we make to both our staff and our clients.

Radfield became the home care agency of choice in Shrewsbury and surrounding areas  as word of our service spread and  we were able to  extend the reach of our services through setting up Radfield Home Care branches in first Worcester, then Stafford and more recently Chester.

We believe that everyone needing care deserves to receive the very best service. They deserve to be treated with kindness and respect and  have their care needs met  in a dignified manner. We have been asked many times to bring our approach to care to other areas of the country and we are thrilled  to be opening another Radfield Home Care office in  Bromsgrove and Redditch.

Our Approach to Care

Written by

Radfield Home Care takes great pride in being able to offer our clients the highest standard of service. In order to do this we employ only the very best staff who are dedicated to helping you be independent and secure in your own home.

Teresa and Auntie photo

We believe in the enabling approach to care. This means that we recruit carers who understand the importance of supporting and encouraging our clients to do as much for themselves as they are able and make as many decisions for themselves as possible, rather than simply doing everything for them. We belive that this gives a sense of control back to our clients and improves their quality of life.

We have a rigorous recruitment process whereby all of our staff are carefully interviewed, referenced and police checked and we handpick only the most responsible and qualified carers to work with us.

Our carers undergo comprehensive training and are regularly supervised by our skilled team of care supervisors to ensure that their work is of the highest standard.

All our staff must acquire certain skills before starting to work for us. The training programme is extremely comprehensive and includes amongst many other topics:

  • Training in communication skills, security in the home, adult protection, dementia care  and much more
  • A supervision period working alongside and being asessed by our senior care staff.
  • Training in Health and safety, Fire safety, First Aid and Food Hygiene.
  • Medication training and competency assessment.
  • Practical training in Moving & Handling techniques.
  • Catheter care and Infection Control Training.

We continually invest in our staff by encouraging them to undertake further training and professional development. We offer our staff opportunities to progress within the organisation with the support of NVQ training and qualifications.

Our care managers are available at all times for advice and support to ensure that we provide the highest quality of care for you.

About Radfield Home Care

Written by

Radfield Home Care is a family-owned company involving three generations of our family. Established in 2008 by Dr. Hannah MacKechnie and her brother, Alex Green, Radfield follows in the family history of caring for the elderly.

We are proud to say that Radfield Home Care has provided care for all of our grandparents.

Radfield Residential Home, Kennedy Rd, 1982

Our parents, Chris and John, made the decision to establish Radfield Residential Home in Kennedy Road, Shrewsbury. After finding a tired, old house-conversion of flats, which were desperately in need of loving attention to bring them back to life, Chris, John, Hannah, Alex and grandparents Joan and Trevor, worked tirelessly to renovate the old house and created a warm and welcoming home.

From the age of six and eight, we had the privilege of living our childhood alongside the older people in our care home and the rich experience that it brought to our lives.

Radfield Home Care with Grandparents

Hannah worked in the residential home before training as a doctor at Birmingham University. After qualifying, she worked in hospitals across the UK and in Christchurch, New Zealand, and later as a GP in Hampshire, London and Shropshire. It was whilst working as a GP, that Hannah recognised the need for local home care that has quality at its heart.

During this time, Alex progressed his career in finance working for companies such as HSBC and Halifax and then with charitable organisations in various locations around the UK. He then returned to settle in Shropshire and once again work in the family business.

Radfield Home Care Agency Launch 2008

March 2008

Alex and Hannah established Radfield Home Care and in great entrepreneurial tradition worked out of the garage adjacent to the residential home!

At this time, Hannah had her first son and her parents and grandparents would drop in to the office on a daily basis getting to know all the staff – the office had a special family atmosphere.

Lynn was our first employee as a carer and has stayed with the Radfield family, progressing to head up our finance team.

December 2008

With a little sadness to leave the spirit of the garage behind, we moved into our first office in Frankwell, Shrewsbury, where our office is still located.

We were very proud to receive our first award: the Shrewsbury Mayor’s Gold Courtesy Award 2014 and have since continued to consistently win awards for our service.

June 2016

So that we could follow our commitment to invest in the local community and workforce, we launched the franchising operation of Radfield, enabling a valuable member of staff to subsequently become our first franchisee, now director of Radfield Home Care Worcester, Droitwich & Malvern

December 2016

Our commitment to creating the Radfield family and our culture of Caring for our Carers™, was officially recognised when we became the first company in the UK healthcare sector to be awarded a B Corp certification - a proud moment and achievement for everyone.

Radfield Home Care Family

June 2017

By June 2017, we were proud to announce that we had 3 franchise branches on board; Havering & Brentwood, Herefordshire & South Shropshire, and Bexhill Hastings & Battle.

In 2018, we reached a proud milestone, celebrating our 10th franchise partner joining the Radfield family. We also expanded our franchise sales and support team, to provide ongoing support to our franchise branches and create a platform for future growth.

April 2019

In April 2019, we moved into our National Office in Shoplatch, Shrewsbury, where our franchise support team are based.

June 2019

in June 2019 we were delighted to receive news that we had won a prestigious accolade; the British Franchise Association’s HSBC Emerging Franchisor of the Year 2019.

As well as this fantastic achievement, 2019 was a year of celebration seeing many further awards gained across our offices, achieving the prestigious national Top 20 Home Care Group status for the second consecutive year. Three of Radfield Home Care’s franchise partners also triumphed in regional categories. In London, Radfield franchises in Havering & Brentwood as well as Richmond, Kingston & Hounslow achieved Top 20 Home Care Provider status ahead of over 1300 other providers in the region. Whilst in the West Midlands, Radfield Home Care Herefordshire & South Shropshire saw off almost 1000 other providers to be recognised in the region’s Top 20.

We are proud of all our hard-earned achievements and a list of our awards is here…

Our childhood spent living amongst the  older residents of our parents care home was a rewarding experience on many levels and left us with a deep understanding of how to care for older people with true respect. Caring was in our blood but we also drew inspiration and passion for home care services from:

  • Recognising this was a sector in desperate need for high quality providers and those willing to embrace and adopt new technology to enhance the offering.
  • The opportunity to continue the family-caring business, whilst enabling people to remain in their homes.
  • Adding value and serving the community through employment with progression opportunities, and providing a much-needed service.

The Radfield Mission

We started out in 2008 as a small and dedicated team of carers, with a determination to offer the highest standard of care. Through word of mouth and recommendations, we grew from the garage to where we are today. Our journey is one of hard work but it is rewarding and we never waiver from our mission of:

'Providing Exceptional Care by Exceptional People.'

The Radfield Family Values

Over time, we have developed both our core values and our Caring for our Carers™ pledge, as a public statement and demonstration of the commitment which we make to our staff and clients.

We are a Family - we care about all of our people and believe passionately that by treating our carers as a trusted family we can empower them to treat our clients with the same warmth and respect.

We are Proud to Care - we are proud to stand out for the right reasons, to help each and every one of our people reach their potential, and that we are always pushing for the very best.

We are on Your Side    - we believe in looking after people and empowering them to live their own unique lives to the full. We understand, listen, and act as caring advocates, in order to uphold your wishes and to ensure your well-being.

Dr. Hannah MacKechnie and Alex Green.
