Our Dementia Information Day, held on 5th March at William Penn Leisure Centre (Everyone Active), was a resounding success and a powerful example of what can be achieved when local organisations come together with a shared purpose.
Delivered in partnership with the Rickmansworth & District Residents’ Association, the event brought together residents, carers, professionals, local organisations and community groups to raise awareness, share practical guidance, and strengthen local support for people affected by dementia.
The day was extremely well attended, reflecting the growing need for accessible information and community-based support. Visitors had the opportunity to speak directly with professionals, ask questions, and connect with services that can provide ongoing help and advice.

Each organisation played a vital role in delivering insight, reassurance, and practical support. Together, they helped create a welcoming environment where attendees could access trusted information and meaningful guidance around dementia care and support.
Understanding the early signs of dementia is key to ensuring people receive the right support at the right time. Common symptoms include memory loss, such as forgetting recent events or misplacing items, as well as difficulties with communication, decision-making, and problem-solving.
Changes in mood and behaviour are also common, with individuals sometimes becoming more withdrawn, anxious, or irritable. As dementia progresses, everyday tasks like dressing, washing, and cooking can become increasingly challenging.
Recognising these signs early can make a significant difference, helping individuals and families access advice, support, and appropriate care as soon as possible.
A particularly impactful session at the Dementia Information Day was delivered by Memory Support Hertfordshire. The session focused on how dementia can affect a person’s perception of their surroundings in everyday life.
Attendees learned how common household features such as dark flooring, patterned carpets, reflective surfaces, and mirrors can sometimes cause confusion or distress for people living with dementia.
Importantly, the session highlighted how simple, low-cost adjustments in the home environment can significantly improve safety, comfort, and overall wellbeing.
The success of the Dementia Information Day highlighted the importance of collaboration in supporting those living with dementia and their families. It created a space not only for learning, but also for connection, reassurance, and shared understanding.
