Knowing where to turn for the right information and support can make an enormous difference as we get older. Yet through our work in home care, we often meet people and families who tell us they simply don’t know what help is available locally or where to begin looking for it.
It was conversations like these that inspired Glyn Clark, Director of Radfield Home Care Camden Islington & Haringey, and me, Po Wun Wan, Director of Radfield Home Care Barnet & Finchley, to work together to create Age Well – a Community Wellbeing Event.

Taking place on Tuesday 22nd September, from 11:30am to 2pm at Glebelands Indoor Bowls Club in Finchley, Age Well will bring local organisations, community groups and professionals together under one roof, making it easier for people to discover the support that is available within their community.
For Glyn and me, collaboration was really important. Although we lead neighbouring Radfield Home Care offices, the people we support don’t live their lives according to organisational or borough boundaries.
We share the same desire to help people remain independent, active and connected for as long as possible, and we felt that by working together we could create something genuinely useful for our wider community.
Good support isn’t always about providing more care. Sometimes, it is simply about knowing what is available and where to find it. There are so many excellent services within our local communities, but unless someone tells you about them you may never know they exist.
It might be a social group for someone who is becoming isolated, advice for an unpaid carer who needs some extra support, help to improve mobility, hearing advice, fire-safety information or simply an activity that gives someone a reason to get out of the house, meet other people and stay connected.
Often people start looking for this information when something has already changed or when they are facing a difficult situation. We would like people to know about these resources earlier and feel confident about where they can turn when they need them.
That is what Age Well is really about: signposting, prevention, connection and giving people information and choices that can help them maintain their independence as they age.
We are delighted to have such a broad range of organisations joining us. Visitors will be able to meet representatives from:
Together, they cover everything from community activities, social support and carers’ advice to mobility, rehabilitation, hearing health, home safety and retirement living.
We are also honoured to be welcoming the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Zahra Beg, who will attend Age Well and give a speech. Her support for the event and its message of creating a safer, healthier and more connected Barnet means a great deal to us.
But we don’t want the day to feel like a formal information fair. We want it to be relaxed, welcoming and enjoyable. People can pop in, have a cup of tea and some cake, speak to organisations one-to-one, ask questions and explore at their own pace. There will also be free chair yoga.
Those three messages are at the heart of our Age Well community event.
We want people to think positively about ageing and to recognise that there are things we can all do, and support we can access, to help us remain part of our communities and continue doing the things that matter to us.
For Glyn and me, success won’t be measured simply by how many people walk through the door.
If someone goes home having discovered a service they didn’t know existed, an unpaid carer finds some much-needed support, someone who has been feeling isolated discovers a new community activity, or a family feels more confident about where to turn when they need help, then Age Well will have achieved exactly what we hoped it would.
Age Well takes place on Tuesday 22nd September, from 11:30am to 2pm at Glebelands Indoor Bowls Club, Summers Lane, Finchley, London N12 0PD. The event is free and open to people aged 45+, carers, family and friends supporting older adults, and anyone interested in staying active and independent as they age.
