A beautiful day celebrating National Wildlife Day at our Spondon Day Centre! It was all about connecting with nature, getting creative, and enjoying the simple things that bring us together.
Our group took part in some lovely hands-on activities:
It was about so much more than crafts and gardening, it was about sharing stories, having a laugh, working together, and enjoying each other’s company. Now, our bird houses, feeders, and wildflowers will give us something to look forward to as we watch the wildlife they attract!
At Radfield Derby, Ashbourne & South Derbyshire, we believe every day should bring purpose, companionship, laughter, and opportunities to try something new.

We took a trip down memory lane to celebrate all things words, books, writing, and a little bit of nostalgia along the way:

Our clients enjoyed learning simple signs and discovering words and phrases from different languages. It was lovely to hear from our well-travelled clients, who shared stories and memories from the many places they have visited.
Our European flag quiz brought out plenty of friendly competition as we reminisced about favourite holidays and special trips abroad.
We had a special day filled with creativity, movement, memories, and plenty of smiles:

Sometimes, the most meaningful connections in care come from simply finding someone who understands. This is the story of Justyna and one of our Polish clients, whose shared language and culture have created a special connection at our Spondon Day Centre.
Justyna joined Radfield Home Care three years ago as a Home Care Professional. Naturally quiet and shy, she has sometimes lacked confidence communicating in English.
Our client, aged 72, moved to England from Poland following the loss of his wife. Living with dementia and speaking no English, he initially found attending the Spondon Day Centre very difficult. When the Care Manager paired him with Justyna, everything began to change.
Being able to communicate in his first language helped him feel safe, understood, and included. He now takes part in activities, learns new skills, communicates with others, and is even picking up some English along the way.
The impact has been just as meaningful for Justyna. Supporting him has given her a renewed sense of confidence and purpose. From bringing in Polish books and magazines to creating Polish-English flashcards, Justyna continues to find thoughtful ways to help him feel that he belongs.
Their relationship is a wonderful example of person-centred care, looking beyond someone’s care needs and understanding the person, their language, culture, history, and experiences.

For 90-year-old Sally, reading has always been a huge part of her life. Originally from Canada, Sally has loved getting lost in a good book from a young age. But when Sally stopped driving, getting to her local library became much more difficult, often leaving her waiting for family or rereading books she had already finished.
Around six months ago, we helped arrange a mobile library service, bringing the library directly to Sally’s doorstep! Every six weeks, six new books are delivered based on her interests, with the previous books collected and replaced.
It has opened up a whole new world of stories for Sally, including discovering authors and genres she may never have picked up herself. Most importantly, Sally says the service has “increased my mood” and gives her something new to look forward to every six weeks.
When asked what she thinks about having the library come to her, Sally simply said:
“It’s lovely.”
And when asked what she would miss most alongside the books, Sally was quick to mention the “good-looking man” who delivers them!
“I can’t thank Radfield enough – going above the day-to-day care you provide.”

We’re delighted to share that both our Recruitment & Training Manager and Care Manager at Radfield Home Care Derby have successfully completed their Train the Trainer in Dementia programme with the Home Care Association.
By becoming trained dementia trainers, our managers can now share their knowledge and expertise with the wider Radfield Derby team, helping us continually develop our compassionate, person-centred care.
Well… we’ve done it again! Our Care Manager simply couldn’t pick just one person this month because the whole team deserves recognition! Throughout annual leave, everyone continued to support each other, step up, and work together as a team.
A few thoughtful gestures from the team this month included:
