Starting a social care career in Derby

Standing amidst the hustle and bustle of a college recruitment roadshow at The Roundhouse, you do not always expect to find your next outstanding team member in a matter of minutes.

Yet when a Level 3 Health & Social Care student from Derby College Group walked up to our Radfield stand, her calm professionalism and genuine passion for supporting others stood out straight away.

Recognising her potential, our Recruitment & Training Manager decided to hold an informal interview right there at the stand, giving her just a few minutes to prepare. Despite the busy hall and the pressure of an unexpected conversation, she communicated with clarity, warmth, and impressive confidence.

Bridging the gap between college and community care

For young people wondering how to start a career in social care in Derby, local college events provide a direct link between classroom studies and real-world employment. Following a formal selection process, she officially joined Radfield Home Care Derby, Ashbourne & South Derbyshire as a Care Professional, embarking on a structured induction and training programme.

Transitioning from college into visiting care allows students to put their learning into practice. Many people ask what qualifications do you need to become a carer, but with over 20 years of experience in social care management, our team knows that core human values matter just as much as certificates.

Compassion, reliability, strong communication skills, and a willingness to learn are what truly make an exceptional carer.

Reflecting on her journey so far, she shared:

“What I enjoy most about working in care is being able to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives by supporting them to maintain their independence, dignity, and quality of life within their own homes.”

Her positive experience shows just how much difference proper guidance makes during those early weeks. For other students considering a similar route, understanding what actually happens behind the scenes helps take the uncertainty out of taking that first step.

Building confidence through structured support and mentoring

Stepping into someone’s home for the first time can feel like a big step. That is why structured mentoring during the early weeks is so vital.

Students often ask how do student care placements work when balancing education with practical work. At Radfield Home Care, new team members are never expected to simply figure things out on their own.

We guide every new Care Professional through the Care Certificate, pair them with experienced colleagues, and hold regular weekly check-ins to review progress and answer questions.

By accompanying experienced Care Professionals on home visits, new team members observe daily routines, learn how to handle unexpected situations, and build genuine confidence before working independently.

As our new team member highlighted:

“The training and ongoing support provided by Radfield Home Care have been excellent, equipping me with the knowledge, confidence, and reassurance needed to deliver high-quality care. Throughout my journey so far, I have felt fully supported by both the management team and my colleagues, which has helped me grow in confidence within my role.”

Our partnership with Derby College Group shows how local employers and educational providers can work hand-in-hand to give students a clear, supported pathway from education into a meaningful career. We look forward to welcoming more students into our service in the future.

How to start a career in social care FAQs:

How do students gain experience in domiciliary care?

At Radfield Home Care, students transition into community care through structured onboarding tailored to their individual pace. Rather than working alone from day one, students receive ongoing guidance, complete full training for the Care Certificate, and attend weekly check-ins with management to review progress and discuss any questions.

What is shadow working in care?

Shadowing is a crucial part of training where new carers accompany experienced Care Professionals on daily home visits. By observing client routines, seeing how colleagues manage unexpected situations, and getting to know clients alongside an experienced team member, students gain practical competence before working independently.

Do you need prior experience to become a Care Professional?

No, prior professional care experience is not essential to start a career with Radfield Home Care. While formal qualifications are welcomed, we place equal value on personal qualities such as empathy, reliability, and good communication skills, providing full professional training and ongoing support to equip new carers for the role.

Can students work part-time in home care alongside their studies?

Yes, home care roles offer flexible visiting patterns that can fit around college timetables, lectures, and personal study routines. This allows students to earn an income and build practical social care experience while successfully completing their qualifications.
