A shared pot of tea, a comfortable chair by the window, and two people discovering they have far more in common than they realised. On 22 October 2026, Radfield Home Care Liverpool North, Sefton & Ormskirk welcomed local clients and guests to the launch of its seasonal “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” friendship initiative at The Royal Hotel in Waterloo.
While the event offered music and afternoon tea, its most meaningful outcome was the spontaneous friendship that began between two attendees, Doreen and Tina.
For older residents across Merseyside, taking part in older people friendship initiatives in Liverpool and Sefton provides an essential doorway back into social life.
At Radfield Home Care, our “Be There” promise centres on being present for the everyday moments that bring purpose and happiness. Seeing Doreen and Tina hit it off over shared recollections demonstrated how creating warm, welcoming spaces is actively tackling social isolation in Sefton.
Making new friends in later life can feel intimidating, particularly when managing physical health conditions or sensory challenges. Doreen lives with both visual and hearing impairments, a combination known as dual sensory impairment.
According to research from disability charity Sense UK, over 61% of people living with complex sensory impairments experience chronic loneliness. Further epidemiological studies from the UK Biobank indicate that sensory loss and loneliness in older adults often go hand in hand, because navigating noisy venues or reading facial expressions becomes exhausting. When visual and hearing cues fade, many people begin turning down social invitations, gradually losing their daily confidence.
Providing thoughtful support for dual sensory loss in older adults makes community gatherings feel manageable rather than overwhelming. By creating an unhurried, quiet environment with good acoustics and dedicated volunteers, our care team ensured that communication barriers did not prevent Doreen from participating fully in the afternoon.
When Doreen sat down alongside Tina, any initial hesitation quickly dissolved into lively conversation. Over afternoon tea, the pair began swapping stories about their childhoods, raising their families across Merseyside, and their favourite music.
Tina’s patience and warm conversation paired naturally with Doreen’s sharp sense of humour. For both women, the gathering was about much more than attending an afternoon event: it was an opportunity to feel heard, share memories, and build a genuine connection with someone who understood the rhythms of later life.
Their connection illustrates the true value of older people friendship initiatives Liverpool families rely on. Meaningful companionship is not about keeping busy for the sake of it; it is about sharing authentic moments that leave you looking forward to the next conversation.
Doreen and Tina are already planning their next meetup at our upcoming community get-together. Their friendship shows that by continuing to host older people friendship initiatives Liverpool and Sefton residents can easily attend, we can turn simple afternoons into lasting memories. Proving that tackling social isolation in Sefton starts with creating warm, accessible spaces, our team remains committed to helping every older adult feel valued, connected, and supported.
