You’ve got a friend in me: Tackling loneliness in Liverpool

You’ve got a friend in me: Tackling loneliness in Liverpool

The sound of live saxophone music drifted across the Marine Room of The Royal Hotel in Waterloo as older residents, family members, and local care professionals gathered over hot tea and fresh scones.

The afternoon gathering marked the official launch of the seasonal “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” friendship initiative, created by us at Radfield Home Care Liverpool North, Sefton & Ormskirk. Designed as an open-door response to seasonal isolation, the event demonstrated how purposeful community events for older people in Liverpool can turn an ordinary weekday afternoon into a lively social occasion.

With many older people finding it harder to venture out as seasonal weather turns unpredictable, finding friendship groups for older people in Waterloo provides a dependable social lifeline. By working alongside historic neighbourhood venues, the initiative is actively tackling loneliness in Liverpool by bringing people together around music and conversation.

A melodic afternoon at The Royal Hotel

Set against the backdrop of the Waterloo seafront, the event focused on relaxed hospitality and shared entertainment. Local saxophonist Alistair Grant provided the musical centrepiece, performing a curated programme of mid-century jazz classics and familiar melodies that encouraged guests to sing along and share recollections of local dance halls.

The hospitality team at The Royal Hotel ensured guests were looked after with unlimited pots of tea, coffee, and a traditional afternoon buffet. Practical assistance from community members made the afternoon run smoothly: local volunteer Joe Sherville assisted guests on arrival, while Keira, the granddaughter of one of the attending ladies, spent the afternoon serving tea and chatting with attendees.

For local families, seeing cross-generational involvement reinforced how informal community events for older people in Liverpool can restore a genuine neighbourhood feel.

How Doreen and Tina formed an unexpected friendship

While the music and refreshments created an inviting backdrop, the true measure of the afternoon unfolded in one-to-one conversations. Among the guests were Doreen and Tina, two local residents supported by Radfield who had never met before.

Doreen lives with both visual and hearing impairments, everyday challenges that can make unfamiliar social settings feel daunting. Despite these communication barriers, Tina and Doreen struck up a conversation over tea, quickly finding common ground as they shared memories of raising their families, discussed their favourite music, and laughed about shared local experiences across Merseyside.

By the end of the afternoon, the pair were exchanging contact details and planning to attend future community meetups together.

Their afternoon shows that while a shared calendar date brings people into the room, it is the space for unhurried conversation that transforms an outing into a lasting connection.

Addressing social isolation & loneliness in older adults in Liverpool & Sefton

Doreen’s experience highlights a critical, often-overlooked challenge in social care: the compound effect of sensory loss and social isolation in older adults.

According to research from the Campaign to End Loneliness, chronic isolation carries a health risk equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, significantly elevating the risk of cardiovascular disease, depression, and cognitive decline.

Studies by deaf & blindness charity Sense and Age UK show that people navigating combined hearing and sight loss face an exceptionally high risk of feeling cut off from their surroundings, as noisy environments and inaccessible transport create steep barriers to participation.

Overcoming sensory loss and social isolation in older adults requires accessible, patient settings where individuals are supported to participate at their own pace.

By providing attentive assistance and quiet seating areas, friendship groups for older people in Waterloo make sure that physical or sensory difficulties do not prevent older adults from enjoying fulfilling social lives.

The role of companionship care in Sefton and Ormskirk

Bringing people together in communal venues directly reflects Radfield’s guiding ethos: “Be There.” This approach emphasises that high-quality care is not merely about completing domestic chores, but about nurturing relationships that protect personal identity and self-worth.

Lesley Malone, Community Engagement Coordinator for Radfield Home Care Liverpool North, explained the motivation behind the initiative:

“It was wonderful to see everyone come together to enjoy such a happy afternoon. The music, laughter, and conversations created a lovely atmosphere, but one of the most special moments was seeing Doreen and Tina meet and begin their friendship.”

For many older people, having trusted companionship care in Sefton and Ormskirk serves as the initial bridge to re-entering community life. A dedicated Care Professional can provide the gentle encouragement, reliable transport, and physical assistance needed to attend a local lunch club or concert with complete confidence.

Combining reliable home visits with friendship groups for older people in Waterloo creates a protective safety net, playing an active part in tackling loneliness in Liverpool throughout every season.
