At Radfield Home Care Harrogate, Wetherby & North Yorkshire, our Care Professionals are out in our local communities making a meaningful difference every day. Esther is a member of our care team with a talent for lighting up a room. This is a glimpse into her day and the positive effect she has on people’s lives:
“As a carer, I start my day by putting on my uniform and driving through some of the most stunning parts of Yorkshire, hot chocolate in hand. By the end of the day, I am heading home with a smile on my face, new stories to tell and that ever-familiar sense of accomplishment.
“My first client tells me about their family visiting over Christmas; being surrounded by their grandchildren and remembering all they have done in their life. My next client can’t wait to share the latest good news from their doctor, and hearing how excited they are, puts a grin on my face from ear to ear. I visit my next client who’s not had the best morning and they’re feeling down. After a good talk (and a cup of tea!), they’re wiping away tears of joy and laughter.
“The flexibility that comes with being a carer may shock you. I regularly achieve things in my workday that I once never thought possible, including writing an essay and seeing a friend between client visits. I support my clients for maybe an hour each time, but sometimes it feels like we’ve had a full day of adventuring together. It might seem like second nature to us as carers, but to our clients, our visits can change the course of their entire day.
“I have a client who’s lived all over the world, and we share travel stories. Another client used to run multiple businesses and we compare notes on the working world nowadays. I have clients who live on farms, clients who live in the middle of the city, and clients who are always moving and experiencing life outside of their comfort zone. It is an honour to be able to spend time with and provide care for each one of them.
“When I am asked why I love my job, I have one simple response. The people. Being a carer is more than just a paycheck and a badge. I have become ingrained in the lives of all my clients, and I see many of my colleagues as friends and supporters. I love the variety that comes with being a carer. It really is true that no two days are the same. I am always learning something new, both about myself and the people I work with. Interacting with multiple clients in rotation means that there is never a dull moment.
“I love the constant mental engagement that comes with it. I have had many a good intellectual debate with a few of my clients, especially fellow book lovers. When I lay my head to rest at the end of the day, I know I have truly made a difference to everyone I’ve helped. I can see the gratefulness and appreciation in the eyes of the clients, their families, and friends. They trust us to ensure the health and safety of the people in our care, and we do not disappoint. To me, being a carer is not just a job, it’s a lifestyle – to be versatile and overcome daily challenges for the betterment of others.”
