Gemma’s Story

REGISTERED CARE MANAGER, JOINED 2022

We would like to introduce you to Gemma Bough, the Registered Care Manager for Radfield Home Care Shrewsbury & Oswestry. Gemma’s journey from starting as a Care Professional to leading the team is a fantastic example of the career progression possible within Radfield Home Care.

From Family Carer to Career Success

Gemma’s journey into care was deeply personal, beginning when she provided end-of-life care for her nan who was diagnosed with cancer. The experience was profound and ignited a passion for helping others, leading her to join Radfield Home Care.

“After my nan passed away, I thought I want to give something back. This is what I enjoy doing.”

What has inspired you on your journey in care?

Caring for my nan showed me the importance of high-quality, compassionate care. This was reinforced when I saw the poor standard of care my grandad received from a different company. Seeing how he was treated, I thought, ‘I want to do it myself, so I have the understanding of how care should be delivered’.

Why Radfield Home Care?

The support has been brilliant. I always like to run with things, and Radfield has supported me with how fast I’ve wanted to go with my career. They’ve helped me with my personal development plans, finding courses and enabling my progression from day one, which has been fantastic.

Tell us about your career progression.

Gemma joined as a Care Professional and quickly demonstrated her dedication. After a year, she progressed to the role of Care Coordinator. Just a year later, she embraced the opportunity to step into her current role as Registered Care Manager, a testament to her drive and Radfield’s commitment to internal development.

“I’ve just passed my CQC interview and I’m close to finishing my NVQ Level 5. I never expected to progress so quickly. Passing my CQC interview was a moment I’m really proud of; I was so pleased.”

What advice would you give to others considering a career in care?

People need to realise that being a Care Professional isn’t just a job; it’s a career with real development opportunities. We talk to our team about their personal development and where they want to go next. Even if you don’t want to move higher into management, you can grow outwards, broadening your specialist skills and knowledge.
