Preventing falls at home: how collaboration helps keep our North Leeds & Ilkley community safe

At Radfield Home Care North Leeds & Ilkley, we know that supporting older adults to live safely and independently at home takes more than just excellent care; it takes collaboration, knowledge, and proactive action. This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Aaron from OT4Life, who delivered an engaging and insightful session on falls prevention for our team.

Preventing falls is one of the most important aspects of maintaining independence and well-being as we age. A fall can have a significant impact not only physically, but also emotionally, often reducing confidence and leading to long-term challenges in daily life. That’s why we’re committed to equipping our Care Professionals with the knowledge they need to help clients stay safe, steady, and supported in their own homes.

The importance of falls prevention in home care

Falls can happen to anyone, but the risk naturally increases as we grow older. Everyday factors such as medication, reduced balance, muscle weakness, or changes to the home environment can all contribute. At Radfield Home Care North Leeds & Ilkley, we believe that understanding these risks is the first step in preventing them.

Aaron’s session with our team focused on practical ways to reduce falls in the home. He shared valuable insight into how occupational therapists (OTs) and Care Professionals can work together to identify risks early, from rearranging furniture for easier movement to recommending mobility aids and exercises that promote balance.

As Aaron explained, falls prevention isn’t only about reacting when an incident happens; it’s about taking proactive steps to stop them from happening in the first place.

“Preventing falls is key to people as they get older, and also for people staying in their own homes. The role of an OT can go hand in hand with home carers in keeping people safe, not just through action with individuals but also with knowledge sharing.” – Aaron, OT4Life

Working together to support independent living

At Radfield Home Care, collaboration sits at the heart of what we do. Our work with partners like OT4Life, strengthens our ability to provide truly person-centred home care services across North Leeds, Ilkley and surrounding areas. By sharing expertise, we help ensure that our clients receive a well-rounded approach to independent living support.

Our Care Professionals play a key role in identifying small changes that can make a big difference, such as improved lighting, removing trip hazards, or advising families about safe flooring and furniture positioning. These simple but effective measures are a vital part of day-to-day home help and demonstrate how a trusted care provider in North Leeds can help prevent avoidable injuries while maintaining dignity and independence.

Falls prevention also ties closely to other areas of our support, such as post-hospital home care and rehabilitation at home. For clients recovering from illness or surgery, small adaptations can help them regain strength and confidence faster. In partnership with OTs, physiotherapists, and families, our Care Professionals form a united front to promote recovery and maintain mobility.

Empowering Care Professionals with knowledge

Education and continuous learning are central to how we deliver quality home care in Ilkley and North Leeds. Sessions like Aaron’s are part of our ongoing training programme that ensures our Care Professionals are confident, capable, and well-informed. By understanding how the body changes with age, and how health conditions or medication can affect steadiness, we can offer better care and reassurance to every client we visit.

Our Care Professionals often act as the first line of observation in a person’s home. They notice early signs of change, such as a slower walking pace, reduced grip strength, or difficulty getting up from a chair, and can raise these concerns quickly. This proactive approach allows us to adapt care plans before a fall happens.

We believe this joined-up way of working between healthcare professionals, families, and community Care Professionals makes Radfield Home Care one of the most trusted local care agencies in North Leeds & Ilkley.

A safer future for home care clients

As people age, staying active, informed, and safe at home becomes increasingly important. By combining specialist support, personalised care for those living with dementia, and the expertise of professionals like occupational therapists, we create a well-rounded approach to wellbeing.

At Radfield Home Care North Leeds & Ilkley, our goal is simple: to help people live well for longer, surrounded by familiarity, comfort, and support. Falls prevention is just one example of how we champion care that people both want and need. It’s part of our wider mission to help our nation age well by keeping people connected to the things that matter most to them.
