At Radfield Home Care Chester & Ellesmere Port, we believe in celebrating the moments that matter, especially those that bring people together to reflect, remember and connect. Our recent VE Day-themed celebration at our Chester Day Care Centre did just that, as our members and Care Professionals came together for a joyful day of reminiscence, companionship and meaningful engagement. It was a wonderful reminder of how our day care services offer ongoing support for older people in Chester, blending history, fun and community.
One of the most heartfelt moments of the day came from Moira, one of our wonderful members, who stood proudly to read a touching poem. Her words brought emotions to the surface and gently stirred memories from across the room, creating a shared sense of connection and reflection among everyone present.
To recreate the spirit of 1945, we welcomed a talented live singer to perform classic wartime songs. Familiar melodies filled the room, prompting smiles, foot-tapping and even some dancing. It was moving to watch our members light up as they joined in the choruses, transported back to a time of resilience, hope and celebration.
Our space was also decorated with wartime memorabilia, from replica gas masks to ration books, which encouraged conversation and storytelling. Members shared their own memories of wartime childhoods, family celebrations, and the communities they grew up in. These exchanges not only brought history to life but also strengthened bonds between those in the room. Events like these offer engaging and meaningful things to do for older people in Chester, especially for those looking to stay connected to their past and each other.
Food has a wonderful way of bringing people together, and our VE Day lunch did just that. At the request of our members, our chef served up a classic favourite, fish and chips, followed by a nostalgic dessert of lemon Roly-Poly with custard. It was the quietest moment of the day, with everyone too busy enjoying their food to chat!
Mealtimes at our day care centre are always special; they’re a time to relax, share stories, and enjoy a home-cooked meal with friends. It’s just one of the many ways we provide support for older people in Chester, helping individuals maintain a sense of connection and comfort in their daily lives.
Laughter was certainly on the menu during the afternoon’s activities. We hosted a range of themed games, including the much-loved ‘pin the cigar on Churchill’, which had everyone giggling. These activities go beyond entertainment, they encourage movement, spark conversation and help form new friendships.
It’s always heart-warming to see members who arrived as strangers leaving with a smile and new connections. This sense of belonging is what our day care service is all about.
At Radfield Home Care Chester & Ellesmere Port, we understand that wellbeing in later life goes far beyond medical support. Social interaction, mental stimulation and companionship all play a role in healthy ageing.
That’s why our day care centre in Chester offers more than just a place to spend the day. It’s a welcoming, inclusive space where older people can take part in enjoyable activities, share meals and stories, and feel part of a caring community.
