New Caring for Carers Café launches in Kenley

When you spend your entire week caring for someone else, who is there to look after you? For thousands of family members balancing prescriptions, appointments, and household chores, caring for an older loved one can be quietly isolating and physically exhausting.

To provide a much-needed breathing space, Radfield Home Care Caterham, Oxted & Edenbridge is launching a new carers café in Kenley at Rokewood Court. Designed as a warm, welcoming space for unpaid and volunteer carers, this monthly meetup allows you to unwind, chat with peers, and find practical community guidance.

Starting on Thursday 26 November 2026, the café is completely free to attend, with tea, coffee, and fresh refreshments provided. Taking place on the last Thursday of every month between 10am and 12 noon, these free carers drop in sessions require no referral or advance booking. You are also welcome to bring the person you care for along with you!

A dedicated space for carers to connect and recharge

Across our local neighbourhoods, thousands of individuals support an older spouse, parent, or neighbour daily without ever formally thinking of themselves as an unpaid carer. Whether your routine involves preparing meals and helping with the weekly food shop, or providing continuous, round-the-clock physical assistance, caregiving responsibilities leave little personal time.

According to data published by Carers UK, 82% of unpaid carers report feeling lonely or isolated, while over 70% experience chronic mental health strain from juggling duties alone. Across the London Borough of Croydon, local health assessments indicate that over 30,000 residents provide unpaid support, with thousands more across neighbouring East Surrey.

Research from the Alzheimer’s Society demonstrates that attending family carer support groups provides a powerful emotional outlet. Talking with people who genuinely understand the challenges of caring helps reduce stress and rebuilds social confidence.

The new carers cafe in Kenley provides a relaxed, friendly environment where you can speak openly without judgement. There is no set agenda: you are free to share stories, ask practical questions, or simply sit back and enjoy a quiet cup of tea. Sometimes, having an hour out of the house in good company is all it takes to reset.

Bringing the person you care for

One of the greatest barriers to joining a support group is finding someone trustworthy to look after your relative while you are away. Respite cover can be difficult to coordinate, leaving many family members stuck at home.

For that reason, anyone attending our dementia carers support group Kenley sessions is welcome to bring the person they support with them. Rokewood Court offers a comfortable, accessible lounge environment where your loved one can relax and socialise alongside you.

Please note that the café is an informal social gathering rather than a supervised day care service. While our fully trained Radfield team will be on hand to offer a warm welcome, carers remain responsible for their relative during the morning. Making these free carers drop in sessions accessible to couples and families ensures nobody misses out on community connection due to care commitments.

Informal advice, guest speakers, and local resources

In addition to relaxed conversation, our carers cafe in Kenley is designed to connect local households with helpful advice that makes daily care easier to manage.

Each month, we will invite local health practitioners, wellbeing professionals, or specialist support charities to join us for an informal 15-minute discussion and an open question-and-answer session. Topics will cover practical matters such as:

  • Accessing local authority carers assessments and council support in the local area.
  • Claiming non-means-tested benefits, including Attendance Allowance and Carer’s Allowance.
  • Practical strategies for managing memory changes and nighttime disorientation.
  • Arranging equipment adaptations and home safety aids.

The emphasis will always remain relaxed and conversational. There will be no corporate presentations or pressure to speak, just a helpful opportunity to ask questions if you need guidance.

For families looking for a dedicated dementia carers support group Kenley and Purley residents can trust, these monthly mornings offer clear, honest direction.

Supporting carers and older adults across our community

The launch of the café reflects our ongoing mission to deliver practical support for unpaid carers in Caterham, Oxted, Kenley, and surrounding communities. We believe supporting older adults to live well with dignity means actively investing in local community initiatives that support the relatives standing beside them.

Alongside our new carers cafe in Kenley, our weekly Adult Day Centre in Woldingham runs every Monday, providing structured social activities, cognitive games, and a freshly prepared hot lunch for older adults, while giving primary caregivers a dependable full day to themselves.

Combining our visiting home care services with community hubs ensures families receive flexible support for unpaid carers in Caterham and Oxted at every stage of their caring journey. Creating welcoming spaces like our monthly dementia carers support group Kenley hub is another practical step toward helping our community age well together.
