When does helping an ageing parent with the weekly groceries and prescriptions turn into full-time caregiving? For most families across Northwood, the transition happens so gradually that no one realizes they have taken on the role of an unpaid carer until exhaustion sets in.
Recognising this unspoken pressure, Radfield Home Care Northwood, Ruislip & Uxbridge partnered with Mountwood Surgery on 19 October 2026 to host a practical carers workshop. The session cut through administrative jargon to help local families with navigating older care options in Northwood, connecting hidden caregivers with community networks and dependable unpaid carers support.

Across our neighbourhoods, thousands of individuals support older spouses or parents daily, often without identifying themselves as unpaid carers. From managing multiple prescriptions and coordinating hospital trips to helping with washing, preparing meals, and providing emotional reassurance, caregiving responsibilities develop quickly.
According to data published in the Hillingdon Joint Carers’ Strategy, there are 22,465 residents identifying as unpaid carers across the borough. Notably, nearly 29% of these individuals provide 50 or more hours of care every week, representing one of the highest proportions of intensive caring across North West London. Despite this commitment, local authority reports show that over 80% of adult carers decline or miss out on formal assessments, frequently because they see their role simply as being a good son, daughter, or spouse.
The workshop opened with an introduction from the Mountwood Surgery clinical team, followed by personal accounts from family members discussing the emotional and physical toll of long-term caring.
Mugdha Sharma, Owner and Director of Radfield Home Care Northwood, Ruislip & Uxbridge, contributed a practical session focused on helping families navigate the different care options available locally.

A central theme of the workshop was that families often have more support available than they realize, including services provided free of charge. The discussion outlined several key areas of support:

A common concern raised by families was managing the sudden transition from a hospital ward back to living at home. When planning hospital discharge care, families are often unfamiliar with short-term rehabilitation pathways.
Under the NHS “Discharge to Assess” model, patients who are medically fit should have their ongoing care needs evaluated in their own home rather than in a hospital bed. Families learned about intermediate care and reablement services: short-term, council-funded support typically lasting up to six weeks designed to help an older adult regain physical confidence after an illness, stroke, or surgery.
Similarly, many unpaid carers are unaware that they can request their own carer’s assessment, independently of whether their loved one receives council-funded care. Understanding these options can help families make informed decisions, plan ahead and feel more confident about the future.

The workshop created a valuable opportunity for carers to share experiences, ask questions and learn more about the resources available in Hillingdon. It also highlighted the importance of accessible information and community conversations that help families find their way through what can sometimes feel like a complex care system.
At Radfield Home Care Northwood, Ruislip & Uxbridge, our commitment to supporting older people extends beyond the care we provide in their homes.
We believe that helping people live well with independence and dignity also means investing time in our community, building relationships with local organisations and raising awareness of the support available to older residents and their families. We were delighted to contribute to this event and thank the Mountwood Surgery team for organising an informative and engaging afternoon.
