Launch of ‘compliments to carers’ scheme a big success

The giving and receiving of a compliment can really bring a feeling of great warmth and of being appreciated to us all. Radfield Home Care Havering and Brentwood have taken this one stage further and have recently introduced a ‘compliments to carers’ scheme.

Yanique, care coordinator at Radfield Home Care Havering and Brentwood runs us through the ‘compliments to carers’ scheme and why it really is a labour of love for all involved:

How did the idea for ‘compliments to carers’ come about?

“We receive an outstanding number of compliments on a daily basis and, whilst we always strive to pass these on to the carers, we noticed a gap in our ‘official’ recording of compliments. In an attempt to boost morale during what has been a challenging time for all, and to remind our care professionals of the amazing work they do, we decided to introduce a compliments section to staff meetings. During this section we share the most recent compliments we have received from our clients and their families.”

How was the scheme received?

“Staff responded really well to the ‘compliments for carers’ scheme, so we asked all of our care team to nominate 1-2 people to be recognised for the amazing work they do, with a brief explanation why they have nominated these individuals. This not only boosted our compliments portfolio, but also helped to inject some much-needed positivity into the care team following a difficult year due to COVID.”

Why is giving and receiving compliments so important in the care sector?

“Being a care assistant is by no means an easy job. You work alone for the majority of your time, working long hours (often on cold mornings or dark evenings) and you never really know what situation you are walking into when you put the key in someone’s front door! The coronavirus pandemic has brought about many challenges and difficulties, but has also shone a bright light on the resilience, compassion and selflessness of the care worker.

The messages of appreciation from clients, their families and fellow colleagues has helped to remind the team of the fantastic work that they do each and every day. It was lovely to see how these messages were received and to see on the carers face that they truly are appreciated by the Radfield family.”

Recognising hard work and empowering others to share their opinions is all part of Radfield’s Caring for our Carers™ pledge. The ‘compliments to carers’ scheme embodies this perfectly and is something Radfield Havering and Brentwood has been proud to introduce.
