In this weeks video, Jennie Bardrick from Radfield Home Care talks about care options for a loved one by looking at the pros and cons of care homes. A bit about care homes

The care home has typically been the choice for people as they grow older. It provides a permanent place to live for someone and can be just for personal care needs or even higher nursing needs. Some care homes also have specialist accommodation for specific conditions e.g. dementia, which can be beneficial.

It may be right for someone to be in a care home if they have specific/high nursing needs or maybe if family live very far away.

The advantages of a care home are:

  • The client will have 24 hour support from trained staff
  • All bills will be included in the cost of their stay at the care home
  • Care homes are typically highly safe and secure
  • Care homes often organise social activities for residents to enjoy

The disadvantages of a care home are:

  • Care homes can be very expensive
  • It can be difficult for someone to move from their familiar home to live in potentially just one room
  • Clients can feel like they have lost some of their independence in a care home
  • Living in a care home involves living closely with residents who the individual may not get along with
