Supporting independence for people with sight loss in Shropshire

Radfield Home Care Shrewsbury & Oswestry is working alongside Sight Loss Shropshire to host the See Hear Remember exhibition at Theatre Severn on Tuesday, 16 June. This article focuses on the support available for those navigating the challenges of visual impairment. Living with sight loss can make daily tasks more difficult; however, the right information and equipment can help people maintain their independence.

The Walker Theatre area of the exhibition is dedicated to sensory support. Here, visitors can meet organisations that provide practical tools and emotional guidance.

  • Sight Loss Shropshire: A lead organiser of the event; this charity provides information and support to help people with visual impairments lead active lives.
  • Specsavers: Experts in eye health who offer advice on managing conditions and using low vision aids.
  • Shropshire Fire and Rescue: Provides “Safe and Well” visits. They offer advice on home safety tailored to people with sight loss, ensuring that potential hazards are identified and managed.
  • Shropshire Libraries: Offers a home library service; this is ideal for people who may struggle to visit a physical library but wish to access audiobooks and large-print resources.
  • Wace Morgan: Provides legal advice on matters such as lasting power of attorney; this is an essential consideration for those managing long-term health changes.

Karen Corcoran from Radfield Home Care Shrewsbury and Oswestry notes:

“People living with sight loss often struggle to find clear information and support in one place. By bringing these organisations together, we help people discover tools that support independence.”

How home care supports visual independence

Radfield Home Care provides tailored support for individuals with sight loss. Our care professionals are trained to assist with tasks that become challenging when vision is impaired. This includes helping with reading mail, managing medication, and ensuring the home environment is free from trip hazards.

We focus on what people can do rather than what they cannot. By providing consistent support, we enable people to stay in their own homes while remaining connected to their community. Whether it is accompaniment to appointments or help with meal preparation, our goal is to ensure safety and wellbeing.

Accessible transport for visitors

To ensure the event is accessible for those with visual impairments, a free shuttle bus service is provided by Housing Plus Group. The bus runs every 30 minutes from Shrewsbury Train Station and the Bus Station. The short four-minute journey to the venue means visitors can travel safely without the stress of navigating unfamiliar routes alone.

How to attend the See Hear Remember exhibition

There is no need to book tickets for the See Hear Remember exhibition. Visitors can simply arrive at Theatre Severn between 10 am and 3 pm. Whether you are looking for specific medical advice, legal information, or just want to see what support is available locally, there is something for everyone.
