Dementia Action Week: Staying connected with loved ones with dementia

Dementia Action Week: Staying connected with loved ones with dementia

The 18-25th of May marks the national Dementia Action Week. We are taking time to recognise the importance of connection, understanding, and community support for those living with dementia and the people who care for them.

At Radfield Home Care Worcester, Droitwich & Malvern, we know that a dementia diagnosis can bring uncertainty for families. Many people worry about how relationships may change or how they can continue to meaningfully connect with a loved one as their memory changes over time.

But while dementia can affect memory and communication, the need for companionship, reassurance, and belonging remains just as important.

Connection is more than conversation

One of the most valuable things families can remember is that connection does not always have to come through words alone. Some of the most meaningful moments can come from enjoying some time together and sharing familiar experiences.

For somebody living with dementia, comfort and joy can often be found in:

  • Listening to familiar music
  • Looking through photographs
  • Enjoying a walk together
  • Sharing a favourite meal or cup of tea
  • Completing simple activities side by side
  • Talking about meaningful memories and life experiences

These moments may seem small, but they can have a significant impact on wellbeing, confidence, and emotional connection.

The power of music and meaningful activity for dementia

Music can be particularly powerful for people living with dementia. Familiar songs often spark memories, encourage interaction, and create moments of happiness and recognition.

Across our Adult Day Care Centre and the dementia cafés we support within the community, we regularly see the positive impact music has on both individuals living with dementia and their carers.

Activities such as Music Bingo, singalongs, quizzes, and reminiscence sessions help create an environment where people feel included, engaged, and connected. Importantly, these activities also give carers and loved ones the opportunity to enjoy positive shared experiences together.

Dementia support for the whole family

Dementia does not just affect the individual, it impacts families, friends, and carers too. Dementia Action Week is an important reminder that support is available and that nobody should feel they have to navigate the journey alone.

Community groups, dementia cafés, local organisations, and social opportunities all play an important role in supporting loved ones with dementia, reducing isolation and helping people continue living well after diagnosis.

At Radfield Home Care, we are passionate about supporting these community connections across Worcester, Droitwich & Malvern. Through our care services, Adult Day Care Centre, and community engagement work, we are committed to helping people remain connected to the things, places, and people that matter most to them.

Creating moments that matter

This Dementia Action Week, we encourage families to focus not on what dementia may take away, but on the meaningful moments that can still be shared together.

Whether it’s singing along to a favourite song, sharing a conversation over coffee, or just sitting together in familiar company: connection still matters, and those moments continue to hold enormous value. Because living with dementia should never mean facing it alone.

If you are looking for support for a loved one living with dementia, or simply want to find out more about our community groups, we are here to help. Contact our team today to learn how we can support your family.
