10K Dementia Swim Challenge for Dementia UK

On Sunday 1 November 2026, Registered Manager Victoria Baker will begin the Dementia UK November Swim Challenge, committing to swim 10 kilometres throughout the month to raise money for a cause that is close to her heart.

Swimming at her local gym, Victoria will be completing approximately 150 lengths of an 18-metre pool each week. That is around 2.7 kilometres of swimming every week, fitting a considerable physical challenge around her professional responsibilities.

But for Victoria, this is about much more than swimming. It is a chance to turn personal experiences into positive action and help raise awareness of the support available to people living with dementia in Altrincham & Sale and those who care for them.

Dementia UK November Swim Challenge

A personal reason to make a difference

Dementia has affected people Victoria loves, and seeing its impact first-hand has strengthened her determination to do something meaningful to help others facing similar experiences.

Dementia is a progressive condition that changes far more than memory. It reshapes household routines, affects communication, and often places considerable emotional pressure on spouses and adult children.

According to research from Carers UK and the Alzheimer’s Society, more than 700,000 unpaid family carers in the UK currently care for someone living with dementia. Furthermore, national health data indicates that 1 in 3 people will care for a person with dementia at some point in their lifetime.

Victoria wants to help ensure that people living with dementia are treated with dignity, compassion and understanding, and have the opportunity to enjoy the fullest life possible with the right support around them.

By fundraising for Dementia UK, she hopes to contribute towards the charity’s work supporting families through its specialist Admiral Nurses, who provide expert advice and emotional support to people affected by dementia.

Bringing our commitment to care into the community

Supporting someone living with dementia is rarely the responsibility of one person alone. Families, Care Professionals, healthcare teams, charities and community organisations all have an important role to play.

Through her professional work, Victoria is keen to build relationships with local organisations and encourage greater collaboration to support older people and their families across Altrincham, Sale and Trafford.

She hopes this Dementia UK November Swim Challenge will help start conversations about dementia, highlight the importance of supporting family carers and encourage people to seek advice and assistance when they need it.

Every length, every donation and every share counts

Taking on 10 kilometres of swimming throughout November will require determination and consistency. Victoria is hoping that colleagues, local residents, businesses and fellow care professionals will get behind her challenge.

Every donation, no matter how small, will help her work towards her fundraising goal. Sharing her fundraising page can also help spread awareness and reach people who may wish to support the cause.

Victoria’s message is simple: people affected by dementia should not have to face the journey alone. With greater awareness, understanding and access to support, we can help individuals and families navigate the challenges dementia can bring.

We are proud to support Victoria in taking on this personal challenge and raising awareness of a cause that matters so much to her.
