Uniting for Dementia Action Week 2026

Dementia Action Week 2026 (18th–24th May) brings the UK together to challenge the stigma surrounding dementia and build more inclusive, understanding communities. Led by the Alzheimer’s Society, this national campaign is a vital reminder of the realities faced by the nearly one million people currently living with the condition in the UK.

At Radfield Home Care Harrogate, Weatherby & North Yorkshire, our local team sees daily how relationship-led, person-centred support transforms lives. We are proud to use this week to champion open conversations, celebrate the resilience of families, and highlight how tailored support helps individuals thrive where they feel safest, at home.

Redefining dementia care: Comfort and familiarity at home

Dementia is an umbrella term for a group of symptoms affecting memory, communication, and daily routines. Because the condition impacts everyone differently, affecting everything from emotional well-being to spatial awareness, one-size-fits-all care simply doesn’t work.

Remaining in familiar home surroundings offers immense therapeutic benefits, providing a sense of stability that drastically reduces anxiety. Our tailored home care services focus on preserving independence and dignity through:

Often, the most profound connections are sparked by the simplest things, like old photographs, familiar music, or memory books. Emma, one of our Care Professionals, shares how personal insights shape this approach:

“Things I’ve learned from working with people with dementia (& more so from personal experience with my dad). Life skills don’t just go away – just approach them in a different way. Make new memories – I made a ‘This is Your Life’ book for my dad so we, and carers had something to start conversations from.”

Frontline perspectives: Insights from our team

To mark Dementia Action Week, our team members reflected on what real, compassionate dementia support looks like in practice:

Alice, Care Professional

  • “To me, supporting someone with dementia means helping them feel safe, respected and understood. It’s about being patient, offering reassurance and remembering that even the smallest acts of kindness and familiarity can make a big difference to someone’s day.”

Molly, Care Professional

  • “I think what matters most in dementia care is understanding that everyone experiences dementia differently, which is why person-centred care is so important. Respecting someone’s routines, preferences, boundaries and independence helps build trust, reassurance and a safe environment that positively impacts wellbeing and quality of life.”

Kate, Community Engagement Officer

  • “One small thing I’ve found that really helps people living with dementia is music, they often come alive listening to old favourites. Whether we sing during calls or play music while we work, it can make such a difference.”

Building stronger dementia networks for families and communities

Dementia impacts the entire family unit. Relatives often balance demanding care duties alongside their own careers and commitments. Professional, trusted home care gives these families crucial peace of mind and the breathing room they need.

Beyond individual homes, building a dementia-friendly community requires collective action. From supporting local memory cafés and social lunches to practicing simple everyday habits, we can all contribute to a more inclusive society.

How you can make a difference today:

  • Practice patience and active listening
  • Include individuals in conversations rather than speaking over them
  • Offer gentle reassurance during moments of confusion
  • Support local dementia initiatives and charities
