Connections Cafés in Bromley: Bringing People Together

A new initiative is transforming cafés across Bromley, Orpington & Beckenham into vibrant community hubs, tackling loneliness and bringing people together. Connections Café locations in Penge, Orpington, and Bromley provide welcoming spaces where older people can socialise and take part in engaging activities. Run by qualified drama facilitators in conjunction with Care Professionals from Radfield Home Care Bromley, Orpington & Beckenham, they offer free, themed weekly events that encourage attendees to engage with others, share experiences, and form meaningful connections.

Tackling Loneliness in Bromley’s Older Community

Loneliness among older people is a growing concern across the UK, particularly for those living alone or receiving care. Research shows that social isolation can significantly affect mental and physical health, increasing the risk of depression, anxiety, and even early mortality.

Connections Café is working to address this issue head-on, offering a warm, welcoming environment where older individuals can escape isolation and find new friendships. Mercedes Yearly, Director of Quest Soul Theatre CIC, highlighted the importance of these initiatives:

Through drama and creative activities, we help our participants express themselves, connect with others, and rediscover joy. It’s incredible to see how these sessions bring out hidden talents and spark new friendships.

Connections Café in Penge: A Place to Find New Friends

One of the most exciting additions to the area is Connections Café in Penge, launching on 11th March 2025, running every Tuesday from 11 am to 1 pm at the Queen Adelaide Community Centre. Aimed at reducing loneliness, the café provides a safe and inclusive space for older people to connect with others, enjoy a cup of coffee, and take part in a variety of engaging activities.

Each week, the café hosts themed events such as arts and crafts sessions, music workshops, storytelling circles, and quiz afternoons, all designed to spark conversation and bring people together. These sessions are completely free of charge, removing financial barriers that may prevent older individuals from accessing social opportunities.

By offering interactive activities, Connections Café fosters a sense of community. Arts and crafts sessions encourage collaboration, storytelling circles create intergenerational connections, and music sessions allow attendees to sing along or simply enjoy the atmosphere.

Orpington and Bromley: Expanding Social Connections

Connections Café in Orpington runs every Thursday from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm, offering a similarly engaging and welcoming environment. Each week, themes rotate—one session might focus on classic films and shared memories, while another celebrates occasions such as Christmas or Diwali. The variety ensures there is always something new to enjoy.

Meanwhile, Connections Café in Bromley has been running for over a year and a half, typically on the last Tuesday of each month. This café goes a step further by celebrating the diverse culture of the local community, incorporating special events to reflect Bromley’s rich heritage.

Simi Ghuman, Director of Radfield Home Care Bromley, Orpington & Beckenham, emphasised the importance of these cafés:

These cafés are more than just a place for coffee—they’re a lifeline for those who feel isolated, offering connection, conversation, and a sense of belonging. It’s about creating a space where every older person feels valued and included.

Building Community and Preventing Isolation

These cafés stand out because they encourage active participation rather than passive socialising. Whether it’s a group activity, a shared interest, or a themed event, every visit provides an opportunity for engagement. The welcoming atmosphere ensures that no one feels left out.

Connections Café provides an important service for older people, offering not just a place to relax but an opportunity to make meaningful connections. For those who may have lost loved ones or simply find it difficult to leave their homes, these cafés offer a chance to rediscover joy and companionship. And with themes constantly changing, every visit brings something new and exciting to look forward to.
