At Radfield Home Care Epsom & Leatherhead, we’re always on the lookout for simple yet powerful ways to help older people live safely, independently and confidently at home. One such initiative is the Lions Club’s Message in a Bottle scheme, a free and potentially life-saving service that could make all the difference in an emergency.
You might not expect a small green bottle in your fridge to be a lifeline, but that’s exactly what this scheme is designed to be. The Message in a Bottle is a straightforward tool to help emergency responders access vital medical information quickly and efficiently. In a world where we assume digital records are easily shared, the reality is quite different. NHS systems often can’t exchange information easily due to cyber security risks, meaning that in a crisis, emergency crews still rely on us to provide essential details.
But in a stressful moment, it can be hard to recall everything – medications, allergies, conditions, emergency contacts. That’s where this little bottle comes in.
Each bottle contains a form where you can record key information about your health and care needs. Once filled out, the form is stored inside the bottle and placed in your fridge. Why the fridge? It’s one of the few places in a home that’s almost always present and easy to locate. The kit also comes with green stickers for your front door and fridge to alert emergency responders to look for it.
This simple system has already helped save lives by giving paramedics and other first responders fast access to accurate medical details, when every second counts.
At Radfield Home Care Epsom & Leatherhead, we’re proud to support this initiative as part of our wider commitment to helping people age well in their own homes. Whether you live alone, manage a long-term condition or simply want to be prepared, we believe every household could benefit from this free resource.
We’re currently ordering a supply of Message in a Bottle kits for our clients, and our Care Professionals are happy to help fill them out during visits if needed. This is just one of the many ways we support older people across the local area, from Leatherhead to Epsom, Ashtead, Bookham, Dorking and surrounding communities.
