Alzheimer’s awareness month

September is Global Alzheimer’s Awareness Month Promoting education, early detection, support for affected families, and public engagement in reducing stigma and advancing research. Sadly the disease progression and prevalence is increasing:

  • Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer.
  • In the UK, someone develops dementia every three minutes.
  • Globally, 55 million people live with dementia, of whom 33 to 40 million people are living with Alzheimer’s disease.
  • 68% of deaths related to Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia are women.

The facts are startling; the impact of dementia across society is vast, with women being disproportionally affected. Increasing awareness strengthens public understanding, promotes early detection and diagnosis which can improve access to treatment and planning.

It also aims to encourage healthy lifestyle habits that may reduce dementia risk and help support efforts to improve brain health worldwide.

Helping to support caregivers and families through education and community engagement. By increasing visibility for ongoing research and global advocacy efforts.

Next year we will be running a Dementia Group – please get in touch if you or someone you know maybe interested in attending.

Wanstead Festival 2026

Wanstead Festival In The Park 2026

On Sunday 13th September we enjoyed a fantastic day at the fabulous Wanstead Festival 2026. This was our fourth year showcasing our services and raising money for Samaritans at Wanstead Fest.

It was a mixed day weather wise but the community were not deterred and great fun was had, with music, arts and crafts, food and connecting with old clients and making new friends.

Community Activities

Our Creative Art & Wellbeing Workshops are continuing to thrive with an Hawaiian themed water colour scene at our regular monthly workshop in Loughton. Fortnightly seated exercise sessions at Hainault Baptist Church and we are now helping to run their fortnightly Friends together ladies group, that’s been meeting for nearly 20 years!

Team News

This month four of our care professionals completed their annual practical refresher training. The session was run by Tara one of our senior care professionals who recently qualified as a Train The Trainer. Not only did the training reinstall knowledge, policy, best practices and responsibilities but was also a great bonding session.

Did you know? September 21 – World Alzheimer’s Day

Dementia affects millions of people in the UK, as well as their families and friends.

World Alzheimer’s Day was established in 1994 by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) during its 10th anniversary, and takes place annually on 21 September as the focal point of World Alzheimer’s Month.

This global campaign includes global events, educational campaigns, and the release of the annual World Alzheimer Report. It is dedicated to raising awareness, challenging stigma and supporting individuals affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, highlighting the global impact of Alzheimer’s disease and the importance of early detection, research, and community support.

It is a time for individuals, families and communities to come together and in some cases take on fund raising activities. An opportunity to increase understanding of all dementias, challenge misconceptions and make sure people affected by the condition know where to turn for support.

The Alzheimer’s society, Alzheimer’s Scotland and Dementia UK all have specialist Dementia nurses to help support individuals and families as they come to terms and deal with the daily realities of a dementia diagnosis. These Dementia nurses play a crucial role, providing a range of services including:

Clinical Training Fellowships open to nursing and allied health professionals, offering specific training and support in dementia care.

Dementia Research Nurses A pilot program that aims to increase the participation in clinical trials for people living with dementia.

Admiral Nurses are specialist dementia nurses, from Dementia UK who offer free expert advice, clinical, emotional, and practical support to families affected by dementia. They are registered nurses with advanced dementia training and offer tailored guidance through helplines, clinics, community services, hospitals,
and care homes.

These nurses are embedded within the NHS, providing critical support throughout the research journey and helping to raise awareness of the importance of clinical research in improving dementia diagnosis, care, and treatment.
