Supporting the “sandwich generation”: Radfield Home Care partners with Carents

The term sandwich generation refers to a group of people, typically in their 40s, 50s, or 60s, who find themselves “sandwiched” between two generations. They are often raising their own children while simultaneously supporting ageing parents.

At Radfield Home Care, we are a family and we believe passionately in being on your side. We understand that looking after an ageing parent is a significant commitment that often develops gradually. Whether it begins with helping with the weekly shop or managing medical appointments, the responsibilities of an adult child can quickly grow into a complex role that involves balancing work, children, and two households.

To better support our clients and their families, we are proud to announce our partnership with Carents, the UK’s national organisation dedicated to supporting adult children caring for their parents.

What is a carent?

A “carent” is an adult child who provides unpaid care or support to one or both ageing parents, in-laws, or elderly relatives. There are currently over 4 million carents in the UK, making up 57% of all carers. Despite their vital role, many do not identify as “carers”; they simply see themselves as a son or daughter helping out.

Together, this group provides approximately £100bn of unpaid care annually. However, this dedication often comes at a personal cost:

  • 71% of carents have had to change their career paths.*
  • 37% have altered their retirement plans.*
  • 55% face significant wellbeing or health issues.*

How Carents can help your family

Carents has developed The Carents Room, a free, award-winning digital platform designed to provide practical answers and emotional support 24/7. This resource is particularly valuable for the “sandwich generation” who are time-starved and may be navigating the complexities of the health and social care system for the first time.

By visiting The Carents Room, families can access:

  • Practical guidance: Information on health, legal issues, and financial planning informed by NHS and NICE resources.
  • The Carents Lounge: A safe, moderated online community where you can connect with peers who understand your unique challenges.
  • Specialist tools: eBooks and toolkits covering topics such as dementia, medication management, and banking for elderly relatives.

A legacy of care and insight

This partnership allows Radfield Home Care to share insights and knowledge that support people researching and providing care. Drawing upon a legacy of private care delivery knowledge going back over 40 years, Radfield can provide useful and practical insights into the sector for people researching care for themselves, their parents or someone close to them.

At Radfield, we are on a mission to help the nation age well by remaining connected to the things that matter the most to them. Supporting people as they research the best and most appropriate care options for them or a loved one is a key part of that mission. By collaborating with Carents, we are ensuring our four decades of experience reach those who need it most; providing clarity and comfort during what can be a challenging time of life.

Through this partnership, we will be contributing expert home care content to the Carents platform, ensuring that more people have access to high-quality information when they need it most. Our mission is to make ageing a more rewarding experience for everyone involved, and supporting the wellbeing of family caregivers is a vital part of that journey.
