There are certain moments in life that stay with us, no matter how much time passes. For Wendy, that moment arrived at her front door in the form of a horse.
Wendy is living with dementia and receives twice-daily visits from our team at Radfield Home Care Chester & Ellesmere Port. Our Care Professionals support her with personal care, medication, meals, and maintaining a safe environment, helping her to continue living independently in her own apartment.
During visits, Wendy often spoke about horses. She shared stories about Duke, the horse she once owned, and the pride she felt during those years. She also spoke about meeting Desert Orchid. Although she stopped riding at 70, her connection to horses had never faded. It was clear this was not just a fond memory, but a meaningful part of her identity.
Chris, one of our Care Professionals, immediately recognised the importance of this. As a horse owner herself, she understood the emotional connection Wendy was describing. Rather than leaving those memories in the past, she wanted to bring them into the present.
With careful planning to ensure safety and comfort, Chris arranged for her horse to visit Wendy at home. When the horse arrived, Wendy’s reaction was immediate. She smiled, reached out with confidence, and began talking more freely about her experiences.
What stood out most was not just the joy, but the familiarity. Wendy wasn’t being prompted or encouraged to remember – the memories came naturally, sparked by something real and meaningful in front of her.

Following the visit, Wendy appeared more relaxed and positive during her care calls. She spoke more clearly and with greater confidence, and there was a visible lift in her mood. Moments like this can help reduce feelings of isolation, while bringing a renewed sense of comfort and reassurance.
For Wendy’s daughter, the experience meant something just as important. It showed that her mum is understood as an individual, with a life rich in experiences that still matter today. That level of understanding builds trust and provides genuine peace of mind.
