How companionship care brings joy back to later life

How companionship care brings joy back to later life

“I was worried I might never see the seaside again.” When one of our clients shared this heartfelt fear during a routine visit, our team immediately got to work. A few weeks later, six of our clients were enjoying the crisp salt air, a coastal stroll, and plenty of shared laughter on a memorable day trip to New Brighton!

Making seaside dreams a reality in New Brighton

What began as a single wish turned into a fantastic group outing. Our trip started with a warm cup of tea along the seafront followed by a breezy walk along the promenade. Despite a blustery breeze, spirits remained sky-high as our clients shared stories, and re-discovered coastal memories!

After our walk we enjoyed a delicious lunch at The Seahorse restaurant before heading home. It was a relatively simple day out, but it created something much more valuable; an opportunity to enjoy a change of scenery, spend time together and make new memories.

Trip to the seaside for Chester's home care client's. Showing how companionship care brings joy The clients have continued talking about the trip ever since. They have been sharing memories of the day with our Care Professionals and with one another at our day centre, telling us how much they enjoyed it.

It has also been lovely to see the friendships that have developed between our clients. Days like this give people the chance to spend time together outside their usual routines, discover shared interests and create experiences that they can continue to talk about.

For families considering care for a loved one, this is an important part of the picture. Companionship care and personalised home care can help someone remain connected to their interests, relationships and local community, rather than care becoming simply about the practical aspects of everyday life.

How companionship care brings joy Why home care is about far more than practical tasks

When families begin researching home care options, the primary focus is often on essential daily routines: safety, mobility support, and practical care around the house. While safety and independence are fundamental, true quality of life comes from staying connected to the places, hobbies, and experiences that bring genuine happiness.

Companionship care in Chester bridges that gap. Whether it’s a trip to the coast, a visit to a local garden centre, or help attending a favourite community group, personalised care empowers older adults to keep living life on their own terms.

What “Be There” means to us

Our beach day is a wonderful example of what we mean by our “Be There” approach to care. Be There is built around three principles: Be yourself, Be connected and Be inspired. These commitments reflect our belief that people should be supported to remain themselves, maintain important relationships and have opportunities to pursue the things that matter to them.

For us that can mean listening when someone tells us about something they would love to do and considering how we can help make it possible. It could be a trip to the seaside, a visit to a favourite garden centre, lunch somewhere special or simply finding ways for someone to reconnect with an interest they have enjoyed throughout their life.

This is one of the reasons personalised care matters. Every person has their own history, preferences, relationships and aspirations. Taking the time to understand these can help us provide home care that supports the whole person, not simply their care needs.

Helping people continue living life their way

Our beach day was memorable not because it was an elaborate occasion, but because it meant something to the people who were there.

One client had worried that she might never see the seaside again. Instead, she was able to enjoy the experience alongside five other clients, build friendships, share laughter and create memories that she continues to talk about.

That is what we want home care to help make possible; supporting people to age well while remaining connected to the people, communities, places and experiences that matter most to them. This trip was a prime example of how companionship care brings joy back to later life.
