At Radfield Home Care Epsom & Leatherhead, our mission is to help people remain connected to what matters most to them. One of our most poignant experiences recently involved a client who, during a period of severe illness, expressed a clear and heartfelt wish: to be at home. This moment reminds us that care is not just about clinical support; it is about dignity, choice, and compassion.
When the client was first admitted to hospital, the unfamiliar environment and constant activity quickly became overwhelming. For someone living with dementia, the noise and pace of a hospital ward can be disorienting and distressing. He repeatedly made it clear that he wanted to be at home, in the environment that reflected his identity and independence.
Our Care Professionals acted with understanding and empathy, supporting him in ways that preserved his dignity and recognised who he was. Even in his final days, we ensured that his choices remained at the centre of his care, reinforcing that being themselves is central to wellbeing, no matter the circumstances.
When the client’s health declined and it became apparent he was approaching the end of his life, he remained in hospital. He had a trusted bond with one of our Care Professionals, who knew his routines, his silences, and his family’s needs. She visited daily, providing personal care, reassurance, and comfort, not only to him but also to his wife and family.
Our team advocated tirelessly to ensure that his wishes were heard. We coordinated:
Being connected to family in those final moments brought profound comfort and peace to everyone involved, demonstrating how care at home in Epsom & Leatherhead can nurture relationships and emotional wellbeing.
Through the client’s determination and our timely support, he was able to spend his final day at home, surrounded by those he loved. This moment exemplifies how being inspired to lead the life you want is possible even at the end of life. His experience highlights the importance of listening, acting decisively, and ensuring care reflects personal values and choices.
For our team, this experience reaffirmed that “being there” means more than presence – it means advocacy, coordination, and unwavering support during life’s most delicate moments. His family expressed profound gratitude, reassured that his wishes had been fulfilled, leaving a legacy of peace rather than regret.
