Radfield Home Care Herefordshire and South Shropshire, is a member of the UK Government’s apprenticeship scheme and has been extremely impressed with the performance of their new business administration apprentice, Lucy Bridges.

The UK National Apprenticeship Service is open to those who are over the age of 16, not in full time education and who are living in England. It provides the opportunity to work alongside experienced staff and gain job-specific skills, something Radfield is keen to support as a registered apprenticeship provider. Job opportunities can be found on the ‘Find an apprenticeship’ site, as Lucy explains:

“I had been working part time within the retail sector but was very interested in pursuing an apprenticeship in business administration in the Hereford area. I searched using the Government’s apprenticeship website and Radfield Home Care came up - it was such a great match, a business admin role within domiciliary care, a sector I was also very interested in finding more about.”

Lucy’s apprenticeship journey so far has been a positive one:

“I joined Radfield in March 2020, but due to the Covid-19 lockdown I was only there a week and a day! It did give me the chance to meet the team though and, even in that short space of time, they made me feel very welcome and I knew straight away, on the first day, that I’d made the right decision about the apprenticeship. I restarted again at the beginning of May, and I also have to report to a training apprenticeship company, who conduct monthly reviews with me and ensure I’m hitting the apprenticeship training criteria.”

Following the lifting of some of the Covid-19 restrictions, Lucy was able to restart her apprenticeship and has clear goals for the future:

“When I returned to Radfield in May I had a refresher course in the office processes and was trained in the day to day business administration activities. On a daily basis, I deal with timesheets, care workers files and also help with onboarding of new care professionals. I usually field all sorts of calls coming into the office, anything from carers calling in, enquiries for the management team or client calls. It’s so varied. Everyone at Radfield is extremely friendly - if I have a question everyone is really helpful and I soon know the answer.

Part of my role is client facing and I deal with home care enquiry calls - this is something completely different from what I’ve done before but I’ve been appropriately trained and I really enjoy taking these calls - the clients are always extremely lovely to talk to.

Being in the role will allow me to build a wider understanding of the adult social care sector and the types of care service activities that our care professionals do and how this fits into the Radfield business model. I would 100% recommend Radfield for an apprenticeship opportunity. I would love to stay on here and for me it’s all about further developing my skills in business administration, supporting our clients, and hopefully progressing as far I can within Radfield.”

Director of Radfield Home Herefordshire and South Shropshire, Kiain McKean, has been very impressed with Lucy’s progress:

"Since Lucy joined in March, she has settled into the office environment working with her colleagues brilliantly, despite the covid pandemic and restrictions on office working. She has been a breath of fresh air and has excelled in supporting the business in staff onboarding, marketing activities, maintaining data and spreadsheets, and much more. We look forward to a great future working with Lucy."

Radfield is keen to support apprentices and empower individuals in the company so they are able to develop their skills and knowledge, in order to build the confidence that ultimately enables career progression - a commitment encompassed in their ‘Caring for our Carers™’ pledge.
