Earlier this year, The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) launched a national campaign to address the vacancies in adult social care in England. The campaign aimed to increase interest in adult social care as a career choice and increase the understanding of the variety of roles in the care sector, making a role in care more appealing to a wider audience.
Radfield Home Care, providing person centred home care to older people in the Herefordshire and South Shropshire communities, welcomed this initiative. Kiain McKean, owner and director, commented:
“This campaign has not come soon enough for our sector. Our focus is providing exceptional care to people in our local communities and without exceptional care staff, we cannot achieve this. The care sector provides incredibly rewarding job opportunities, offering competitive rates of pay, flexibility around family life with fantastic career progression.
In the rural territories of Herefordshire and South Shropshire, the additional challenge for director Kiain and his team, is recruiting care staff that are happy to travel relatively long distances between their clients and putting hundreds of miles on their own cars. To overcome these challenges and in support of the national campaign, Kiain has introduced a pool car scheme, providing each carer with a pool car as and when they need them to visit clients. The pool cars are available to all staff and since introducing the scheme a number of weeks ago, the branch has seen an uplift in candidates applying for a career in care with Radfield.
Kiain explains: “We are up against some stiff competition in the region, and have realised that we need to offer something much more appealing to potential staff. Since introducing this scheme, we have taken on a number of new carers, and are seeing the real benefits of such a great scheme… we only wish we had done it sooner!”
Liz Wagstaff, an invaluable carer with Radfield has welcomed the initiative commenting:
“I love my job but have found the expense incurred when driving my own car is not compensated totally with the mileage allowance, mainly due to the bad repair of most of the roads in and around the area we cover. With access now to the pool cars it means that we don’t have to worry about the wear and tear on our own vehicles, which in turn save money on the maintenance. It’s also great brand awareness for the business, and makes me feel very proud to be part of the Radfield family.”
