Radfield Home Care Herefordshire & South Shropshire is privileged to announce that it has opened its doors to the local Stroke support group, proudly sponsoring ‘Different Strokes’, providing them with a room at the Radfield Hereford office with unlimited refreshments one day per month to allow the group to get together in a safe and supported environment.

Different strokes is a registered national UK charity that provides support for younger stroke survivors throughout the UK, with a local group set up in Hereford.

Lydia Payne, organiser of ‘Different Stokes’ Hereford explains, “I had a blood clot at the young age of 34 due to a hole in my heart. After being discharged from the Herefordshire community stroke team after 8 months, I quickly realised there wasn’t a great deal of other support available. My stroke left me with a left sided weakness, meaning I had to learn to walk again and used my savings to access private rehabilitation. Whilst my time in and out of hospital, my consultant actually suggested that I may want to contact Different Strokes! This changed everything; constant online support, new friends, and a peer group who actually understood!”

After experiencing the great benefits that ‘Different Strokes’ provided, Lydia wanted to be able to offer this in her home town to everyone in a similar position. The group was set up in 2018, and it wasn’t long before people were contacting Lydia and asking to become involved.

The Radfield Home Care support came from one of Radfield’s carers Mandy, whose husband, sadly suffered a stroke in 2018. Mandy and her husband Derek are very much involved in the group and have been actively fundraising throughout 2018 and 2019 to raise funds to support their group and the private rehabilitation sessions they offer.

Kiain McKean, owner and director of Radfield, has assisted Mandy throughout this very sad and challenging time, and when hearing about the great work the group does, Kiain was keen to support the group and the amazing work they do.

Kiain explains, “I am very proud that my business is able to sponsor Different strokes in Hereford. This is a subject that is very close to mine and my sisters heart, as those that know us will know that our mother suffered a stroke this year. It is a great honour and privilege to be able to sponsor and support this amazing group in Hereford by providing a meeting room in our offices regularly, where the group meet.”

Lydia comments, “We now have an accessible room in Rotherwas, Hereford for not just our chat and coffee every month, but also the rehabilitation sessions we will be providing free for all our members. We are so grateful to kiain and his team at Radfield and know this generosity will help our group reach more people than ever. We are excited to be working with them and are looking forward to all the people we can help in 2020!”
