At Radfield Home Care Shrewsbury & Oswestry, we know that quality care goes beyond the front door. Our Care Professionals support people across Shrewsbury, Oswestry, and the surrounding areas, providing personalised home care that includes personal care, medication support, companionship, and help with daily activities. Yet, for many people living with long-term health conditions or on their own, challenges can appear outdoors, from overgrown paths to gates that are difficult to open. Even small obstacles can affect safety and make a home feel less comfortable.
To help with this, we have partnered with Shropshire Thriving Communities Alliance (STCA), to provide practical support to residents’ gardens and outdoor areas. Together, we are helping people maintain safe, accessible, and welcoming spaces around their homes. This partnership strengthens our shared mission of looking after the whole person, in every part of their home environment.
The Community Care & Clean-Up Crew, run by STCA, is a volunteer initiative that offers free, hands-on help with outdoor tasks. Volunteers assist with sweeping paths, light weeding, clearing small areas, and refreshing gardens. There are no forms or long-term commitments, just friendly neighbours giving their time to help people in the community.
Fiona Edwards, Head of Service Delivery at STCA, explains, “We kept hearing from organisations working with older and vulnerable people that the outdoor space was often the thing that slipped. Something as simple as a cleared path or a tidy garden can genuinely change how someone feels about their home, and about themselves. We wanted to do something about that.”
Even small improvements like these can have a big impact on daily life. A safe, tidy path makes it easier to move around, and a well-kept garden can create a space to relax, enjoy the outdoors, and feel connected to the home.
Our Care Professionals in Shrewsbury and Oswestry are often the first to notice when clients could benefit from extra support outdoors. When this happens, we pass the details to STCA, who coordinate a volunteer visit at a time that suits the client.
Fiona adds, “We are not trying to replace anything that exists. We are just filling a gap. And when you fill that gap alongside brilliant partners like Radfield, the impact is so much greater.”
This collaboration reflects our belief that good home care supports the whole person, including the outdoor areas that are part of their home. By combining professional home care with volunteer-led support, we can make a real difference in both safety and wellbeing.

Radfield Home Care Shrewsbury & Oswestry and STCA share a commitment to local communities. STCA works with a wide network of grassroots groups across Shropshire, from wellbeing projects to community support services. Our partnership extends this ethos, combining professional home care with practical volunteer support to improve the lives of people across the region.
This partnership shows that when organisations work together, the benefits for local residents are far-reaching. Residents can enjoy safer, more welcoming outdoor spaces, while volunteers and Care Professionals build meaningful connections that strengthen community spirit.
