Arthritis care

Arthritis is a very common condition that can have a significant impact on many activities in daily life.

Arthritis care and support at home

Arthritis is a common condition that causes pain and inflammation in a joint. In the UK, around 10 million people have arthritis. It affects people of all ages and causes pain and inflammation in joints which can make it difficult to move and to carry on with activities of daily life.

The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis in the UK and tends to develop in later life. Osteoarthritis initially affects the smooth cartilage lining of the joint and as this wears and thins, the ligaments have to work harder and this results in swelling and bony spurs forming which cause pain and difficulty with movement. If the disease progresses to the point where bones rub on each other this can alter the shape of the joint which causes the appearance of osteoarthritic joints. The most commonly affected joints are those in the hands, spine, knees and hips.

In the UK, rheumatoid arthritis affects more than 400,000 people. It occurs when the body’s immune system starts attacking certain joints, which leads to pain and swelling and over time changes to the shape of the affected joints. People with rheumatoid arthritis can also develop problems with other tissues and organs in their body.

Radfield offers specialist support for those with arthritis
We know that arthritis can affect people differently. Some will only experience mild symptoms which don’t have a significant impact on their daily lives, whereas others may be very restricted in what they are able to do for themselves. The joint pain and restricted movement combined with muscle wasting can make some simple everyday tasks extremely challenging for people living with arthritis.

Many people that our Radfield teams around the country care for have arthritis and the day-to-day practical help and support that we are able to provide can be invaluable. This can be just simple household tasks such as changing beds, opening jars and putting shopping away. Depending on the severity of the condition and the individual’s needs, care can also extend to help with washing and dressing, medication assistance and other personal care support.
