It’s a condition that affects people in many different ways, which is why we provide highly flexible and responsive support.

Care and support for multiple sclerosis at home

Multiple Sclerosis affects over 100,000 people in the UK and there are many strategies that can be used to improve the symptom control and quality of life of those living with the condition.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition of the central nervous system where the coating around nerve fibres is damaged which essentially results in signals travelling along nerves being disrupted. This can result in a wide variety of symptoms that affect people in different ways and may include difficulties with balance, movement, vision, sensation, numbness, bladder control and thought processes.

There are two main types of MS which can have different ways of affecting people, symptoms may come and go in phases (relapsing-remitting MS) or steadily progress over time (primary progressive MS).

The majority of people living with MS in the UK have the relapsing-remitting type of the disease. They will have episodes of worsening symptoms or the development of new symptoms and then these slowly improve over a period of time. The time between relapses and recovery can vary greatly from person to person and may be as little as several days through to several years.
